Keeping Your New RV Cool This Summer

Summer is prime time for RV adventures, but high temperatures can quickly turn your RV into a sauna if you’re unprepared. Not all RVs come equipped with a powerful central air conditioning system. So, sometimes, maintaining a comfortable temperature inside your RV during the hottest days requires more than just cranking up the AC.

Whether you’re hitting the road this summer in a brand new or used RV that’s new to you, here’s some strategic planning and a few practical tips for keeping your RV cool and enjoying your summer to its fullest.

1. Park in the Shade

One of the simplest ways to keep your RV cool on your next camping trip is to park it in the shade. When choosing a campsite, look for spots with plenty of natural shade from trees or other structures.

Position your RV to be shaded during the hottest part of the day, usually the afternoon. The best way to do this is to orient your RV so that the western side is shaded to block the intense afternoon sun.

2. Create Additional Shade

If natural shade is limited, create your own. Extend your awning to provide shade over windows and doors, and consider using tarps or shade cloths to create additional shaded areas around your RV. Use tree-friendly straps if tying tarps to trees, or use stakes to secure them to the ground.

3. Optimize Airflow

Take advantage of natural breezes by positioning your RV to face the prevailing winds, which generally flow from west to east in the United States. Keep windows open and use screens to keep bugs out while allowing fresh air to circulate. This can significantly help in reducing the interior temperature of your RV.

4. Use Portable Fans

Portable fans are a cost-effective way to boost airflow inside your RV or camper. Position fans to create a cross-breeze: one fan draws cool air in from a shaded window, and another expels hot air out from a different window.

5. Insulate Your Windows

Windows can let in a lot of heat. Use reflective insulation or insulated window covers to block the sun’s rays.

This keeps your RV cooler and reduces the workload on your air conditioning system. Curtains or blinds can also help by providing an additional layer of insulation.

 6. Maintain Your Cooling System

Keep your RV’s air conditioning system running efficiently with regular maintenance. Clean or replace filters frequently to ensure maximum efficiency. A well-maintained AC unit can make a significant difference in keeping your RV cool.

7. Cook Outside

When you’ve found the perfect RV-friendly camp site, keep the cooking to the great outdoors to enjoy the experience. Using the stove or oven inside your RV can generate a lot of heat.

On hot days, cook outdoors. Use a portable grill or campfire to prepare meals and keep the heat outside. This not only helps keep your RV cool but also adds to the camping experience.

8. Use LED Lighting

Replace incandescent bulbs with LED lights, which generate much less heat. LED lights are also more energy-efficient, a bonus when relying on battery power or limited hookups.

9. Clean Fridge Vents

If you have a refrigerator in your RV, can be a significant source of heat. Regularly clean the fridge vents to ensure proper airflow and heat dissipation. This helps in keeping your RV cooler and your food properly chilled.

10. Shut the Door

Keep your RV’s door closed as much as possible during the hottest parts of the day. This simple step helps retain cool air inside and prevents hot air from rushing in. Encourage family members to minimize the in-and-out traffic.
